Toddler Class
(Walkers as young as 13 months)

Our Toddler class supports the child’s development of cognitive and linguistic skills. The environment is carefully prepared to be in harmony with the process of development. Materials and activities proceed in order of use and complexity while providing freedom of movement and opportunities to explore and discover. The language-rich environment is an extension of the home.

The toddler gains independence in caring for himself.  He engages in cooking, cleaning, gardening, reading, exercising, and the general art of daily living. To nurture and support the child’s development, loving and caring teachers work in partnership with parents.

Primary Class
(Ages 3-5 years)

Our Primary class provides a systematic sequence of learning activities created by Dr. Montessori. These activities support the child’s development of concentration, a sense of order, movement, language, and independence.  In partnership with the teacher and within a prepared environment, the child engages in self-directed activities to construct knowledge, solve problems, and thereby strengthens his capacity for learning. The foundation for life-long learning is formed through specific curricular areas:

  • Practical Life
  • Sensorial
  • Language
  • Mathematics
  • Cosmos education  (science and geography)
  • Music
  • Physical Education
  • Art

Multi-age grouping is flexible and is based on observations of the childs particular developmental phase.

The Montessori Approach

Kingston Montessori is a “Children’s House” where children work and learn as a community. Our learning community is a carefully prepared environment where children move about freely within limits. They select work that captures their interest and are empowered to care for their environment.

The learning process is hands-on, active, self-directed, intrinsically motivating and respectful. As children go about their work calmly and purposefully, the child-centered environment is focused on individual progress and development.

Dr. Montessori’s scientific investigations, philosophy of child development, systematic sequential design of her instructional materials, and instructional methodology provide a clear path to helping children construct knowledge, and acquire life-long skills and abilities. Beginning in infancy children learn everything from their environment. Their sensitivity period for learning is so very strong. They need a rich environment designed to nurture and support their development so that they can reach their fullest potential.
